The Birthplace of Arabica
Widely regarded as the birthplace of Arabica coffee, Ethiopia is home to some of the world's most distinctive coffee-growing regions. Among them, Yirgacheffe, located in the country's southern highlands, stands out for producing coffees with remarkable floral aromatics, lively fruit acidity, and exceptional clarity in the cup.
Coffee is cultivated at elevations of 1,800–2,200 meters above sea level, where cool temperatures, fertile soils, and natural shade allow the cherries to mature slowly. This extended ripening period encourages the development of natural sugars and complex aromatic compounds, resulting in a cup with outstanding sweetness, elegance, and depth.
Yirgacheffe coffees are widely regarded as some of the most aromatic in Africa. This lot reveals an intricate cup profile featuring delicate floral notes, subtle spice, velvety cocoa, and vibrant berry acidity. A long, wine-like finish adds further complexity, making every cup both expressive and memorable.
Coffee Growing in Ethiopia
Ethiopian coffee is traditionally divided into three cultivation systems: Forest, Garden, and Plantation.
Forest Coffee grows naturally beneath the canopy of Ethiopia's indigenous forests, primarily in the southwest of the country. Garden Coffee, the most common production system, is cultivated by smallholder farmers around their homes, where shade is carefully managed through pruning and farming practices vary from one producer to another. Plantation Coffeeis far less common and comes from larger estates using more intensive agricultural techniques, including pruning, mulching, fertilization, and varietal selection.
This diversity of growing environments is one of the reasons Ethiopian coffees display such extraordinary complexity and regional character.
Brewing Recommendations
Yirgacheffe expresses different facets of its personality depending on the brewing method.
- V60, pour-over, and drip brewing highlight vibrant berry notes, bright acidity, and elegant wine-like characteristics.
- Cezve (Turkish coffee), French press, or cup brewing emphasize floral aromatics, gentle spice, and a richer body.
Even within Yirgacheffe itself, coffees can vary significantly from one village or washing station to another, reflecting the remarkable diversity of the region's terroir.
